Lisandra Isabel García
(Cuba, 1989)

On her artwork
Through painting, glass engraving, photography and installations, Lisandra Isabel disputes her subjectivity with respect to the codifications, scripts and images accumulated by society. Each work amplifies her inner world, actualises her identity within the repertoire of figurations that surround her.
An exercise that has led her to question the collective meanings of the feminine, to dig into the visual and cultural archives to question their archetypes. Against this, the presence of her own image, eroticism, her own fears, her private universe in her works, emerge as a way of breaking the encapsulation of her experience in order to rename her individual experiences.
When the artist uses the format of the installation, this need for self-reporting, for mapping herself, for probing her most hidden layers, takes on a sensorial dimension that is distributed in the space and in the materials. The play with reflections, shadows and translucencies denotes the untrappability of the narrative she is trying to reconstruct. An intuition that varies according to the changing and transitory lighting. The superimposition of fragments, an image that envelops another image, mirror cut-outs between which her print emerges, is an expression of that dialogue with fragmentariness —struggle, assumption-, uncovering at the same time the act of renewing the contours of her totality. Fixing the experiences that run through her, underpinning her own being within contemporary dislocation, make her practice a work of disalienation and reinvention.
